Multiversus, which ancient gamers may remember was a well-liked platform fighter featuring iconic Warner Brothers characters, won Fighting Game Of The Year in 2022 and charged players up to $100 for booster packs, looks like it's about to come out.
Yesterday, the Twitter account for the game tweeted what appears to be a tease of something coming, leading to a mixed reaction on social media.
Multiversus "released" in July 2022 and quickly became a popular fighting game on platforms like Twitch. The free-to-play game had a steady release of new content and while its popularity didn't necessarily rival uber-platform fighter Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, it generally garnered goodwill against its closest rival, the other major-IP platform fighter Nickelodeon All Star Brawl.
Then in March 2023, after eight months of garnering that goodwill, it suddenly reminded the world that it was actually in open beta, and that open beta would close on June 25th.
This did not go over all that well with players, many of whom noted that the game was charging fairly significant sums for bonus content. Furthermore, money spent on the game would not be refunded, even though its developers were essentially taking away a game that had been out for nearly a year. The only potential saving grace was that all the content users paid for would still be accessible when the game was released for real in "early 2024."
At the time, some doubted the game would ever see the light of day again, but yesterday's tweet, which qualifies as being posted in "early 2024," seems to indicate Multiversus will make good on its promise.
This led to mixed reactions, as some users were happy to see the game back again while others were still miffed about that whole "charging users for content then disappearing for a year" business.
Glad to have you back! My mic is almost on as well. https://t.co/SDgY6zh6xB pic.twitter.com/RC8E5LIkf9

The timing of their tweet led people to believe Multiversus would be announced at today's Xbox Partner Preview showcase. It was not.
