Last August, Bloomberg reported a rumor that an upgraded Nintendo Switch was in the works for 2021. Today, that rumor seems closer to being confirmed.

Last night, Bloomberg reported that the upgraded Switch looks to release in time for Christmas. The new Switch will have an upgraded, 7-inch Samsung OLED display (the current Switch has a 6.2" display) and will support 4K resolution when docked. Bloomberg speculates Nintendo's upgraded hardware is being made so that the company can compete in a market with Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series One X.

As was the case last August, Nintendo has yet to publicly address the rumored new console. President Shuntaro Furukawa said in February his company has no plans to announce a new Switch "anytime soon." That being said, Nintendo could be holding off on announcing a new console until it's ready to share details on some hotly anticipated marquee titles, such as the Breath of the Wild sequel, which would surely benefit from the upgraded Switch's 4k resolution.

Naturally, there is no official name for the upgraded Switch yet, but Twitter seems overwhelmingly in favor of it being named "Super Nintendo Switch" rather than "Switch Pro."

If the Bloomberg report is to be believed, then 2021 is shaping up to be another banner year for Nintendo.
