Shrek Inducted Into National Film Registry
What do Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Eraserhead and Shrek have in common? They're all considered by the National Film Preservation Board to be among the most culturally significant motion pictures of all time, selected for induction into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry for preservation. Each year, the board selects works of great esteem and cultural import for protection in the hallowed halls of the Library of Congress so that future generations will have the opportunity to honor, learn from and enjoy these great achievements of cinema. Now, Lord Farquaad, known in part as the body of the E meme, joins ranks.
Shrek is among the new class of beloved films to receive the honor. The movies, recently announced for inclusion by the National Film Preservation Board, spans the last 100 years of film history, from Laurel and Hardy's 1928 masterpiece, The Battle of the Century, which boasts the largest pie fight in movie history, to Christopher Nolan's zeitgeist exploding The Dark Knight.
The first film to ever win the Academy Award for Best Animated film, Shrek is a cultural institution in its own right. The film, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, really did change the movie industry. Aside from inspiring numerous sequels and an infinite string of memes, Shrek launched a wave of computer-generated animated pictures to compete with Pixar. Of course, while many of those are not as critically well-regarded as Pixar's work, they no doubt have been a cash cow for DreamWorks Animation, which has consistently released animated features to massive box office grosses ever since.
Of course, the quality of the inductees into the National Film Registry from person to person. However, one cannot easily remove Shrek out of the last 20 years of film culture, which has been inspiring lousy Scottish accents ever since. Welcome to the club, Shrek.
