Not always /this/ bad, but it's been kind of a shit-show circus for a lot longer than people like to admit (the current two-party system basically settled in over George Washington's grave and has been basically one degree or another of Batshit Insane ever since).

Part of why I trend towards Sanders is that he seems less inclined to treat politics like a goddamned game show. There's a lot of nastiness boiling up this election /because/ of how we've historically treated politics like very polite (compared to just butchering your neighbors) tribal warfare, and because of growing public awareness as to /why/ the system is so fucked that we've been electing 'the lesser of two evils' for as long as anyone can remember.
