Shareware CDs were very common in the mid-90's. Everyone and their cousin with an early internet connection took to their BBSes, Usenet, or whatever, found as much shareware crap as they could fit on a CD or two, and sold it at retail in the bargain bin. It worked, somehow, and folks like myself have fond memories of the games that were packed on these puppies. Shareware was still technically commercial, so it was perfectly legal to include it in paid products, and bundles like this gave us PC kids with no other options plenty of great and not-so-great stuff to kill time with between homework and waiting for the next episode of Animaniacs.

Of course, some of these bundle CDs went for eye-catching first and advertising accuracy second. As seen here. The only thing Doom will teach you is to shoot it until it dies. And that gaming is more lucrative than productivity applications, if you're Gabe Newell.
