What I really think happened is actually pretty simple Sonic is a popular video game, and as such it was inevitable that sonic would gain a Christian youth demographic. Since these people are part of a demographic and culture, they think that their culture, Christianity, is "cool So, these people found two "cool" things, Sonic and Christianity. You know what tends to make cool" things cooler in the eyes of many young people? Combining things.
