The tweet was written like a "breaking news" announcement, which contrasted the unserious words that were used. The tweet amassed viral quote tweets and memes in mid-February 2025 as users joked about the tweet being an indicator of "end times" or an economic depression. Many of the memes were notably at the expense of the crypto community.

On February 9th, 2025, X^[1] user @whalewatchalert tweeted, "A $RETARDIO whale just bought $4.03K of $DOGSHIT2 at $3.83M MC 🐳," gaining over 3,900 likes in three days (shown below).

In cryptocurrency terms, a "whale" is an investor who owns a large number of crypto coins or tokens.^[2] Therefore, the tweet was announcing that a "whale" owning a large sum of the meme coin $RETARDIO traded their tokens for roughly $4,000 of a different meme coin called $DOGSHIT2.

Soon after, viral replies and quote tweets of the abovementioned post surfaced on X. For instance, on February 9th, 2025, X^[3] user @WClementeIII quoted the post, imagining what Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto would think of the sentence. It received over 12,000 likes in three days (shown below).

On February 10th, X^[4] user @SxarletRed replied to the original tweet, writing, "This is easily the stupidest time to be alive in history," gaining over 6,900 likes in two days (shown below).

On February 11th, 2025, X^[5] user @DaveOshry tweeted a You're Laughing meme from Joker making fun of the $RETARDIO Whale tweet, gaining over 77,000 likes in a day (shown below).
