Elon Musk's "Human Shield" Son X Æ A-Xii, also known as Elon Musk Using His Son As A Human Shield Theory, refers to a conspiracy theory and accusations, both sincere and humorous, made by Elon Musk's critics alleging that Musk began using his and Grimes' son X Æ A-12 as a human shield after the assassination of the United Healthcare CEO in December 2024. Internet users noted that Musk, known for being distant with some of his children, began bringing his young son along to most of his public appearances despite his ex-wife Grimes asserting that she is not comfortable with her son being used for photo-ops or brought out in public in that manner. The theory spread in late 2024 and early 2025, inspiring controversy and viral debates online.

Origin

Elon Musk's contentious relationship with his children has long been the subject of media interest and speculation. His trans daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson has been a vocal critic of Musk and repeatedly emphasized her perceived failings of him as a father figure.^[14]

In 2023, Elon Musk was photographed with his then-3-year-old son X Æ A-12 (or X for short) at various public events, including the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix,^[1] the December Army-Navy Game^[2] and Super Bowl LVII.^[3] In 2024, Musk ended a protracted custody battle over his son X after his ex-wife Grimes claimed that he was purposefully keeping her son away from her.^[4]

On December 6th, 2024, X^[5] user @InkMasterbator tweeted, "Elon never spends time with his kids but the day after a CEO gets shot in the streets he's father of the year hanging with his little human shield," gathering over 340,000 likes in two months, which referenced the shooting of UHC CEO Brian Thompson that took place two days prior.

On December 6th, 2024, Redditor^[6] /u/MaximumFocus5205 posted about the "human shield son" theory to the subreddit /r/EnoughMuskSpam, gathering nearly 800 upvotes and 150 comments in two months.

On December 31st, Musk appeared at an event at Mar-a-Lago with X on his shoulders, prompting several Twitter users to accuse him of wielding his son as a "human shield," as seen in posts from users @LadyDumplings and @jimstewartson, each gathering over 3,000 likes in a month.^[7][8]

On January 31st, 2025, the X^[9] page @RedditLies made a post criticizing people for alleging that Musk uses his son for his own protection and for threatening him harm on Reddit. The post gathered over 6,000 likes in a week.

On February 11th, 2025, Elon Musk brought his son along to a press conference in the Oval Office, prompting renewed human shield accusations and posts on Twitter and Reddit. For example, X^[10] user @esjesjesj tweeted, "It’s been said before but the fact that he uses his child as a public relations tool and human shield is abusive," gathering over 120,000 likes in a day.

Also on February 11th, 2025, Redditor^[11] /u/No_Lawyer5152 posted, "Leader of the free world uses human shield while answering questions to the press," to the subreddit /r/pics, gathering over 18,000 upvotes in a day.

Grimes' Response

Grimes, Elon Musk's ex-wife, popstar and mother to X Æ A-Xii, made a series of posts in January 2025 asserting that she was not comfortable with her son being photographed in public or brought to multiple media events by his father.

A January 3rd, 2025, post^[12] included her asking X / Twitter user @AutismCapital to censor his page, receiving no response, while a January 10th post^[13] shows her calling her failed attempts to curtail her son's publicity as a "personal tragedy."

On February 11th, 2025, Grimes tweeted, "He should not be in public like this. I did not see this, thank u for alerting me. But I'm glad he was polite. Sigh." The tweet caused the theory and discourse about it to spread online over the following day.
