Color Splash for all its problems was a step in the right direction in terms of the kinds of creative scenarios the game places you in. And the writing was fantastic.

Just bring back the original battle system with some cool modifications, don't make Bowser the villain, make it an interconnected world without making things 1-1, 1-2, etc. and you've got yourself a good Paper Mario game again.
