In a better world, yes we could. Unfortunately the people with power actively take stories like this and spin it in a way that tries and hides what's fundamentally broken with the current system. They take control of the narrative before anyone else does, and spin something that should be abhorrent into "oh look how nice these people are, sticking up for this coincidentally unfortunate person."
