In "The Two Towers" the protagonist Frodo is seen wearing a golden ring around his neck. This is the same ring that Martin Freeman's character finds in “An Unexpected Journey". The rings are a reference to the works of fantasy novelist J.R.R Tolkien, who is director Peter Jackson's favourite author.
