![the topic normally precedes the subject. A sentence such as あたしがその本は買いました[Watashi ga sono hon wa kaimashita] sounds awkward. As a topic marker, là [wa] may also be used with other particles: カレンさんからの電話には出たくありません。 Karen-san kara no denwa ni wa detaku arimasen. I don't want to answer phone calls from Karen. (I don't mind answering the phone if it is from someone else.) One of the functions of l [wa] and [ga] is similar to that of the English articles "a" and "the." Like the indefinite article "a," [ga] introduces a new subject in the story, nar- ration, composition, etc. The topic marker l [wa], on the other hand, works like the definite article "the." The topic marker (& [wa] replaces [ga] when the subject has already been introduced or is known from the context.
