AMBROSE) Heavily-researched account of Lewis and Clark expedition Read it for the meme Justifies manifest destiny Ambrose would be cancelled for these views today THE CRUISE OF THE SNARK (JACK LONDON) The book's description says he circumnavigates the globe in a sailboat Instead he just sails to Tahiti and Polynesia and describes everyone he sees as savages, drops a couple n words SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET (HEINRICH HARRER) This man's story is incredible, he escaped from a POW entered camp, Tibet illegally, and became personal tutor to the Dalai Lama Ardently anti- Communist, describes the occupation of Tibet as cultural destruction THE ART OF THE DEAL ("DONALD TRUMP") Mostly bragging about himself, definitely ghostwritten Good business advice if you live in 1989 but not for the present THE GULAG ARCHIPELAGO (ALEXANDER SOLZHENITSYN) 700 pages of terror, I cried a few times The definitive book about Russia's Gulag system Makes me realize just how evil Stalin was, he had hundreds of thousands of kids murdered along with millions of men and women THEEA SA Every story ends with "and may God bless us all" STORM OF STEEL (ERNST JÜNGER) Makes WWI look like a fun romp Clearly enjoyed killing people and didn't seem to mind getting wounded One of my favorite books ever, have reread three times Jünger himself is an interesting guy, experimented with tons of drugs and died at age 102 WHAT I SAW OF SHILOH (AMBROSE BIERCE) Union Civil War soldier who was traumatized by what he saw but recognized the war was just Best primary source from the Civil War I've read, he makes the stories narrative A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES (JOHN KENNEDY TOOLE) First and only comedy book I've ever read Most disturbing book I've ever read About an obese, hysterical man in 1960s New Orleans I laughed out loud in several places, highly recommended THE WEALTH OF NATIONS (ADAM SMITH) Thoroughly explains why capitalism is the best economic system in existence Thoughtfully addresses and rebukes criticisms Best nonfiction book I've read this year, written 250 years ago but still relevant to today L----- (VLADIMIR NABOKOV) 260 pages of a man r----- a little girl Nabokov claims that Humbert was just a character but he seems like he did a loooottt of research
