Daniel Chong @threebarebears Why I created WE BARE BEARS. BEARS Why I created WE BARE BEARS. When We Bare Bears first premiered on Cartoon Network, I received some questions and criticism about why the Bears were treated so poorly by some humans, and that their treatment often felt unmotivated. After all, these Bears were really fun and cute, so how could anyone deny them what they wanted? My response is it has always been evident to me, as an Asian American, that sometimes individuals are treated unfairly for no other reason than looking different. And although the premise of three Bears trying to fit into human society is a largely comic one, it is to me an allegory for what it feels like to be a minority in America. That said, the pitch for We Bare Bears always had a much broader thematic idea for audiences- the need to fit in and belong. It is a desire I believed everyone (children and adults alike) could understand and relate to- regardless of background. And because we could understand where these Bears were coming from, perhaps we could understand that we are as people not all that different from each other too. I believe in love, understanding, tolerance, diversity, and peace. My crew and I will continue to tell stories that will showcase the better and brighter parts of who we are as people- and the virtues and flaws that connect us, not tear us apart. And if you are nervous for the future, hopefully there is some comfort in knowing that if a Grizzly Bear, a Panda Bear, and an Ice Bear can persevere, so can you. She said she would, and after a long time, she came and presented me with this cake. I looked her In the eye and said thank you before I even looked at the cake. After looking, I nervously laughed and headed to check out it didn't really matter to me that it looked so bad- I thought people would think it was funny. The cashiers at the self-checkout didn't think it was so funny though, and called a few more cashiers and a manager over to look, even taking pictures. To my surprise, after they discussed it, one cashier put her arm on my shoulder and said "The girl who wrote that has Autism. Thank you for smiling and thanking her- even though she's not supposed to write on cakes, you probably made her day." So I guess the moral of the story is that kindness is important!
