"Down Boy!!" "Arf!" is a redraw meme format based on a panel from an issue of an Archie Comics publication that shows the character Veronica Lodge yelling, "Down boy!!" at Archie and pointing to the floor while he obeys, shown in mid-sit saying, "Arf!" like a dog. The panel was first posted online to Tumblr as early as July 2021 and was further popularized as a meme in late 2024 through early 2025, becoming the subject of redraws that year. The image has also been used as an image macro format. Purportedly, the panel comes from a story titled "The Man Hunter" in Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica issue 235, published on June 30th, 1975.

Origin

On July 27th, 2021, Tumblr^[1] user drmonkeysetroscans posted a scan from an unknown issue of Archie comics or one of its offshoots that shows Veronica scolding Archie, yelling, "Down boy!!" as if he's a dog, inciting him to sit and say, "Arf!" The post, captioned, "Obedience training," gained over 125 notes in four years.

The panel purportedly originates from Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica issue 235, published on June 30th, 1975.^[9]

On November 14th, 2024, Redditor u/I-Stan-Alfred-J-Kwak posted the panel to the subreddit /r/theyknew^[2] along with several other Archie comic panels that could be interpreted sexually, garnering over 1,000 upvotes in four months.

Later that same day, Redditor u/The_Black_Jacket posted a meme using the image to /r/Animemes,^[3] using it to represent the plot of Chainsaw Man, garnering over 3,200 upvotes in the same span of time.

Spread

The meme continued to spread in late 2024 and early 2025, often as the subject of redraws. For example, on November 20th, 2024, X^[4] user @GayPuppycat posted a redraw of the panel that references Splatoon, garnering over 700 likes in four months.

On February 19th, 2025, X^[5] user @m0k_m0k_ posted a version of the meme depicting Archie as the Scout from Team Fortress 2, garnering over 6,600 likes in a month.

On February 28th, X^[6] user @aftn0614 posted a redraw depicting the two as Roblox characters, garnering over 5,000 likes in three days. On March 2nd, TikToker^[7] @banamel_ posted a Dog Man redraw that gained over 2.1 million views in a day.

The trend continued to spread on TikTok in the following days, particularly among Russian users and largely under the original TikTok^[8] sound "I'll boom boom boom you" by @twypay.
