About
Type Shit, also known as Type Shi or Type Shiii, refers to an African American Vernacular English (AAVE) slang term with many interpretations, often used to express agreement or approval for something of high quality or as a shorthand for "that kind of stuff." The expression gained significant online usage on TikTok, X / Twitter and Instagram going into the 2020s, commonly being referenced in hip-hop music and memes such as Typa Shit I Been On. The slang is also written online paired with the poop emoji, as "Type 💩" to avoid content on TikTok using the slang being censored.
Origin
Although the expression "type shit" has been used offline since the early 2010s, on September 18th, 2010, American rapper Playboi Carti posted one of the earliest known usages of the slang on his X[1] account in a tweet he wrote about wanting "sum real whiteboy career type shit on this." The tweet (seen below) garnered roughly 10 likes and six reposts in 15 years.

On December 15th, 2010, Urban Dictionary[2] user Starvingmidget posted one of the earliest definitions of the "type shit" slang, writing that it is used similarly to the "that type of thing" or "kind of stuff" expressions. The post (seen below) received more than 520 likes in 15 years.

On April 3rd, 2024, the onemoretimeplus podcast uploaded a clip on TikTok[5] in which one of the guests, the rapper Duke Deuce, claimed the "type shit" slang started in Memphis in 2013. The video received more than 1,100 likes in a year.

Spread
The slang evolved significantly since its early mentions on the internet, gaining traction in the 2020s across various social media platforms where it has been embraced and used more frequently, especially by younger audiences who replaced the "bet" slang for "type shit" or "type shi." The spread of the expression online can also largely be attributed to the popularization of AAVE in mainstream culture, particularly through music and memetic content.
For instance, on September 3rd, 2023, TikTok[3] user @mattfindz posted a comedic video titled "that one homie that says 'type shi' to anything," amassing over 8 million plays and 1.6 million likes in two years. (seen below)

The excessive usage of the slang also sparked some memes on TikTok in the mid-2020s, as user @undos[4] posted on May 15th, 2024, which included a video titled "the phrase 'type 💩' needs to be erased from time." The video (seen below) received more than 7 million plays and 1.5 million likes in a year.
@undos IT HAS TO GO. IMMEDIATELY.
