Break a Leg is a phrase used between live actors and musicians to the same effect as "Good Luck", as saying Good Luck is a Jinx in the live entertainment community.

Orgin

Though existed prior to that, it first appeared in the article "A Defence of Superstition" in the October Edition of New Statesman, stating that the live entertainment industry was the 2nd most superstitious community in England, right behind Horse Racing.

Spread

As a common "Good Luck" replacement to avoid a jinx. It also had an entire song devoted to the line in The Producers.
