Calbee Commercials are a series of TV advertisements launched by Japanese snack company Calbee for their potato chips product. One of the most notable ones feature a dog trying to cheer up a young boy by performing several odd stunts.

Many stills and videos bear the watermark. It is likely that Japanprobe has been the largest amplifier of the meme in the English-speaking world.

In November of 2007, first blogged about the bizarre commercial for Calbee Consomme Punch flavored potato chips in which the giant dog tries to cheer up a small boy, in a post entitled Bizarre Japanese Potato Chip Commercial. It should be noted that the video originally embedded in the post has been removed, but most re-uploads still bear the watermark.

In February of 2008, covered the second commercial of the series in a post entitled Bizare Japanese Potato Chip Commercial Part II.

In October of 2010, once again revisited Calbee’s potato chip commercials, covering a new ad campaign that no longer focuses on the dog, in a post entitled Weird Calbee Potato Chip Commercials.

A TinEye image search reveals that the following animated GIF has appeared on various forums in English and Spanish since 2009. Most variations are simply re-sized and cropped, but show little addition or mutation.

In May of 2010 the image was posted in the comments section of ONTD on LiveJournal.

In July of 2010, the Clapping Calbee Dog gif was posted to where it received 155 notes.
