Background

On January 25th, 2013 Rookie Nail Yakupov scored his second career goal with 4.7 seconds left. The score between the Edmonton Oilers and the defending team, Stanley Cup was 1-0. The clock was below 10 seconds when an air-bound rebound came off the net and was hit out of midair by Nail Yakupov, for the tying goal. The Oilers went on to win the game in overtime. Prior to the Yakupov tally, Edmonton scored with a minute left, but the goal was disallowed.

Origin

The Yakupov celly was very similar to a Theoren Fleury celebration where, after stealing a pass from Edmonton Oilers Mark Messier, Theoren Fleury moves in and scores on Grant Fuhr sending him sliding across the ice in celebration as the Calgary Flames win it OT.

Spread

Nail Yakupov's extended goal celebration from Thursday night has certainly caught the attention of the hockey world, and has been featured on tumblr, under the hashtags #edmonton oilers, #nail yakupov and #oilers. The Oilers featured the celebration on their website featuring Yakupov's patened ":)))))))))))"
