About

You're As Beautiful As the Day I Lost You is a reaction image and series of image macros using a scene from How to Train Your Dragon 2 where Stoick the Vast says to Valka, his long lost wife, "You're as beautiful as the day I lost you." The film was released in 2014 and the scene first became the subject of memes on Reddit in 2019, in which is is often used alongside captions about finding or reuniting with something or someone that is long lost.

Origin

On June 13th, 2014, the animated film How to Train Your Dragon 2 was released. In one scene, Stoick is reunited with his long lost wife Valka. He tells her, "You're as beautiful as the day I lost you."



On August 11th, 2019, Redditor u/5m0k3W33d3v3ryday posted a meme to /r/dankmemes[1] using a screenshot of the scene under the caption, "When you finally find the meme you tried to upvote, but accidentally hit the button that took you to the top instead," garnering over 64,000 upvotes in six years. This is the earliest known example of the meme.

The format proved significantly popular throughout the 2020s, inspiring numerous viral examples on social media, particularly on Reddit. On September 13th, 2019, a version of the meme about loading your old Minecraft world was posted to /r/memes[2] that gained over 13,000 upvotes in six years.

On October 31st, 2024, u/Mrsupersuper posted a version of the meme to /r/memes[3] about the Cartoon Network logo changing, altering the phrasing to, "You're definitely not as beautiful as the day I lost you," garnering over 22,000 upvotes in three months.
