This Looks Shopped

About

This Looks Shopped is an image macro meme that consists of a picture that looks obviously photoshopped and a caption that reads:
“THIS LOOKS SHOPPED / I CAN TELL FROM SOME OF THE PIXELS AND FROM SEEING QUITE A FEW SHOPS IN MY TIME.”

An interesting mix of both subtle & obvious shoops, variants of “This Looks Shopped” image macros have been regularly posted on 4chan and other internet humor forums like FARK and Something Awful.

Origins

While the precise origin of such captioned images remains unclear (and the search is ongoing), the earliest reference made to “This Looks Shopped” can be found in an article posted and cached in 2003 at Metaeducation.com. As it became more and more popular, a graphic designer from New England founded a single topic blog called Thislooksshopped.com.

Another rumor is that the meme started back in 1999, back when Paint Shop was the big image editor. Saying “shopped” meant that it was in Paint Shop Pro from Corel. (Credit to RonUMSC for this information)

Usage in Comment Threads

Since becoming a staple of internet memes, “This Looks Shopped” has been also used as a popular catchphrase under comment threads, typically in response to an image post that looks obviously manipulated. Though to a lesser extent, the phrase is sometimes abused for trolling purposes.

X Doesn't Change Facial Expressions

About

X Doesn’t Change Facial Expressions is the de facto name of an animated GIF meme that involves compiling a series of individual’s stillshots (or celebrity photos) and producing a montage in loop sequence. Much like Noah Kalina’s Photo-a-Day project, the resulting artwork reveals a surprisingly consistent facial expression for each subject depicted.

Origins

The meme initially began as an epic group prank in the notorious SomethingAwful forums. In January 2003, a SA forum user known as “Pitbull” created a thread called Solve the Mystery of the Internet Whore, Win a Fabulous Prize.
Recounting his midnight encounter with a flirtatious stranger “KSwizzle” on Instant Messenger, Pitbull called for a group investigation to reveal the true identity of “KSwizzle.” To make the long story short, SA users dug up an impressive collection of KSwizzle’s photos, which was then compiled into a GIF animation.

Aptly titled Another Girl Who Doesn’t Change Facial Expressions, it was eventually uploaded as a YTMND site in October 2005.

Lindsay Lohan Version & Interweb Feud

In October 2005, a YTMND user SpliceVW created “Lindsay Lohan doesn’t change facial expressions,” which remains one of the most popular “Facial Expression” montages to this day. In January 2006, Lohan’s version became the subject of interweb feud when eBaum’s World hosted and watermarked the Lindsay Lohan GIF file without crediting either SpliceVW or YTMND. Somewhat inevitably, this action led to an online feud between the two communities, allegedly through posting spams and launching denial of service attacks.

Lohan GIF: thiz is teh poker face?

Derivatives

Since becoming a notable fad in the YTMND community, spinoff versions of “X Doesn’t Change Facial Expressions” have been also created as flash animations and YouTube videos. Eric Prydz’ Call on Me is frequently used as the background music.

Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift

Sunday, September 13th, 2009:

At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift won the award for Best Female Video. However, as she began her acceptance speech, Kanye West suddenly appeared on the stage, stole the mic, and told the crowd that Beyonce’s video should have won, as it is “one of the best videos of all time.” He then handed the mic back to Taylor and stormed off the stage. Because Kanye had taken up Taylor’s time, the show cut to commercial before she could continue.

Later in the evening, after Beyonce won Video of the Year, she invited Taylor onstage to finish her speech.
Kanye was reportedly thrown out, and upon returning home, an apology on his blog, written in his signature ALL CAPS STYLE!!!!!!!!!

By Monday Kanye’s interruption was the top news being covered by every mainstream news and media outlet.

The first mashup, Obama interrupted by Kanye

Early Monday morning, Youtube user freeyourpixels created a mashup of Kanye interrupting President Obama. Last week, President Obama spoke before Congress about Health Care reform. During the speech, Republican Representative Joe Wilson heckled te President, interjecting with “You Lie.”

By marrying these two interruptions together into one parody video, and being the first to do so, freeyourpixels became the number one most viewed Youtube channel of the day, and the video was viewed over 1.5 million times in under 24 hours.

Roughly 80 people reuploaded freeyourpixels video.

Obama Calls Kanye a Jackass

The Huffington Post reports that President Obama called Kanye a “jackass” in an off-the-record portion of an interview yesterday with CNC.

ABC News reporter Terry Moran reportedly tweeted the following:

“Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a “jackass” for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT’S presidential."

Although this was viewed by many as a breach of journalist ethics for publicizing off-the-record remarks, it clearly serves as an indicator of the scale of this outburst.

UPDATE
Thanks to user >>DoB<< for finding audio.

Kanye’s initial Apology was turned into a song.

For reasons that are currently unknown, Kanye removed his first apology from his blog.

Kanye Apologizes again.

Monday night, Kanye appeared as a guest on Jay Leno and offered an apology for his outburst.

Taylor Swift Accepts Kanye’s Apology

Yesterday, Taylor swift appeared on daytime talk show The View, where she stated that Kanye had not done anything to get in contact and apologize personally.[video has been removed]

According to a report from the Associated Press, following Swift’s appearance on the View, Kanye called her to apologize personally, which she accepted.

Image macros

On the night of the 13th and morning of the 14th, people on forums across the web began, including 4chan began photoshopping Kanye onto dozens of backgrounds. Before long, a common theme began to dominate the theme of the most popular images’ a Kanye madlib.

“Look X, I’m really [adjective] for you. Imma Let you finish. But Y is the [hyperbole] of all time.”

The second trend involves a traditional four-panel comic, in which Kanye steals the mic (first panel), asks a joke (second panel), tells the punchline (third panel), and then shrugs (fourth panel).

By Monday and Tuesday, Kanye image macros flowed steadily through Tumblr, and at least three new Tumblog dedicated to the new meme has been created.

Kanyegate

A few Single Serving Sites revolving around Kanye were created.

Exploitables – Make Your Own Kanye

By September 15th, a Kanye template for the Aviary photo-editing web appled to further Imma Let You Finish exploitability.

Click here to make your own.

And here is a blank 4-Pane comic for shooping your own text into.

Twitter

Kanye was the #1 top Trending Topic during September 14th and part of the 15th.
As of 7:30PM September 15th, Kanye West was still a hot trend on Twitter, although the majority of activity is made up of those who are still just finding out about it or taking polls about it.

The night of Septeber 16th, Kanye fell to the #3 Trending topic, then down to #5.
A botnet of fake accounts began spamming away with Kanye Messages and links to bogus virus-protection software. Most of the tweets at this point consisted of a mixture of those who were looking to drive traffic to their websites. and those who had simply just found out about the Kanye meme.

Many were still creating new instances of memebrids that were already old, such as “I’ma let you finish” mashed up with “Yo Dawg”, “Patrick Swayze’s death” and “Chuck Norris.” Many tweeted as if they believed they had been the first to put these elements together, which may be evidence of a predictable thought pattern amongst the twitter users caught up in a developing meme.

By the morning of Thursday the 17th, Kanye was back up to the #4 Twitter trending topic. Ashton Kutcher, (@aplusk) had just tweeted the Patrick Swayze Funeral variant, and exposed his millions of followers to the joke well after it had first surfaced. This caused the Partick Swayze variant to experience a resurgence in popularity.

The memetic reaction to Kanye’s outburst only represents a fraction of the entire ordeal, but the spread and popularity of the Kanye parodies on Twitter is largely independent of the rest of the Kanye comments.

Google Insights Analysis

Searches for Kanye West on Monday the 14th have been the highest they have ever been for the artist, and dwarf interest in the Christian Bale rant.

It is safe to say that not only did this one event overshadow anything Kanye West has ever done, but seems to have spread the farthest, proliferated the furthest, and mutated the most in the shortest amount of time when compared to other Internet Memes that we’ve looked at.

In the following trends we see how much of the public interest in Kanye West has had a strong correlation with the VMAs.
Jia Jun Peng, your mother wants you to come home for dinner!

About

“Jia Jun Peng, your mother wants you to come home for dinner.” (贾君鹏你妈妈喊你回家吃饭) Sounds like a fairly innocuous phrase, doesn’t it? But in fact when it was posted on a Chinese internet forum on 16th July 2009, it gave rise to an unprecedented flash flood of public creativity: 300,000 responses within two days.

At 10:59pm the message was posted on a World of Warcraft forum operated by Baidu, China’s largest search engine. The first responses came within minutes, apparently from random members viewing the forum: “I’m not coming back home for dinner today. I’m eating at the internet café. Tell my mother for me, will you?”; “If you don’t come back home right now I’ll make you kneel on the washboard.”

More responses began to pour in by the second, and after six hours there were more than 17,000 posts in the thread. Members had set up accounts as Jia Jun Peng’s mother, sister, grandfather, creating a humorous fictional dialogue between the characters. From Jia Jun Peng’s girlfriend: “Peng Peng, come back. Your mother has accepted we can be together. Let’s not argue.” There were soon entire stories being posted.

The artists were also quick to get involved – every moment a new picture was Photoshopped and posted:

The Government was quick to convene a meeting in the Great Hall of the People to deal with the situation…

Other foreign leaders got involved…

And scientists…

Within hours, the message was everywhere…

What is amazing about the Jia Jun Peng phenomenon is the sheer volume of participation, and the rate of spread. By 1:38 pm on July 20th, four days after the initial post, the thread reached its limit of 315,649 posts. It was 10,421 pages long.

Put Yourself in My Shoes

About

“Put Yourself in My Shoes” is a meme consisting of parodies of a safety notice from the United States Postal Service. Most of the derivatives were created within a few days in 2004 on SomethingAwful.com but the images went viral all over the web.

Origin

On May 20th, 2004, a Something Awful goon named Djarum posted the following message:

So yesterday I walk downstairs to get my mail, along with the tons of free magazines and bills I get this.

Since when has the Postal Serivce been sending out such great little safety notices?

Well of course the first thing that I thought of was to post it on here for everyone to partake in the fun.

I start it when my first horrible attempt.

Hopefully someone can do justice to it.

UPDATE

eaglebtc was kind enough to help everyone out with the whole process. Here’s what he told me:

quote:

I’ve got a multi-layer PSD and a RAR with all the fonts for the HelveticaNeue family. They are in OpenType format, which means anyone using Windows 2000 or XP can read them. Or they can download a free font reader.
Contributors should grab the following archive:
http://www.promotionsfd.com/test/usps-goldmine.rar
It contains the layer-separated PSD template, plus the USPS logo (EPS, with emblem reversed) and the font pack necessary for the text.
The PSD template has all layers separated by component: gray box, outline, dog & man, text, top box, etc. Its current size is 1600×1000, approximately. Becuase I made it larger, I redrew the “vector” objects so they would look better at this higher output resolution (150dpi). The text layers are in place, with the correct font selected. The user must have the fonts installed before they open the PSD or they will receive a warning.

Hope it helps!

In the next ten pages, hundreds of derivatives were created. It soon became a contest.
Invisible X

Another /b/ meme, the Invisible X meme started off as an image macro depiciting a cat in a photo doing something with an “invisible object”. It has further spread across the internet and no longer just depicts cats in the images.

Although Googling the word Invisible would seem counterintuitive due to the generic nature of a single, common, English word, Starting in 2008 there was an unprecedented rise in interest for the word Invisible.

A simple Google Images search returns images of cats with Invisible objects at the forefront.

Although it’s not entirely clear which image started the Invisible X meme, what is clear is how it’s rooted in Caturday.

Ken Lee (“Can’t Live”) is a phonetic interpretation of Mariah Carey’s 1993 cover single and Badfinger’s classic love song “Without You” performed by Valentina Hasan, a contestant who auditioned for the Bulgarian TV show Music Idol in February 2008. Although Ms. Hasan didn’t make the cut to the next round of competition, her audition clip quickly spread through Bulgarian internet hubs and gained over four million views within the first month of debut on YouTube.

In an interview that took place in July 2008, Hasan explained to the Bulgarian media that she had no knowledge of English. She had just learned the song by heart and by ear, by listening to it repeatedly on a cassette recorder, and “sang it the way she felt it.” You can watch the interview clip below.

The popularity of the video encouraged Music Idol producers to invite Hasan back to sing the song live a few weeks later. By this time, Hasan had had more training with the English lyrics, made fewer errors, and poked fun at her own interpretation by singing the final verse in her original style. This video was also posted to YouTube and received over 13 million views (all clips totally) by the first half of May 2008.

Bill O'Reilly Rant

About Bill O’Reilly

Bill O’Reilly is an American political columnist, talk radio personality and host of Fox News Channel’s popular news commentary program, The O’Reilly Factor. Throughout his broadcast career, Mr. O’Reilly’s public image as an educated traditionalist and his uncompromising opinions have gained both praises and criticisms from all sides. And thanks in part to the popular cable TV personalities like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, numerous segments from The O’Reilly Factor have been edited and circulating around the web for entertainment and lulz.

Inside Edition: F**k It, We’ll Do It Live!

If you’re familiar with the man and his show, “making explosive remarks in heat of the moment” isn’t something that Mr. O’Reilly tends to shy away from, especially when he’s on camera. So when this old outtake footage from his Inside Edition days resurfaced on the Internet in May 2008, it shed a new light on what lies at the heart of O’Reilly’s neverending frustration with American politics—his apparently really stressful job. Without a doubt, bloggers and YouTube users had a field day with it.

Longcat

About

“Longcat is looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong.”

One of the older and more beloved 4chan image memes, Longcat is a cat who is quite long. Indeed his true length cannot be measured by mortal means as it passes through all dimensions of existence simultaneously (or somesuch)

In reality the cat’s name is Nobiiru (のび〜る) and he is indeed quite long (according to this Japanese site)

The Longcat image is rumored to have originated on 2Chan, but this claim has not been confirmed.

Catnarok/Tacgnol

Within the Catnarok mythology (see Ceiling Cat) it is believed that one day Longcat will engage in a mighty final battle with his anti-self, Tacgnol (Protip: Longcat spelled backwards).

Sometimes this event is interpreted as the Apocalypse, while others take a more Taoist approach and consider it to be an eternal battle.

Caturday

About

Starting on 4Chan’s /b/ in 2005, Caturday at one time was a tradition on 4Chan in which Anonymous would primarily focus on posting lolcat threads on Saturdays. In fact, locats as we know them today grew out of Caturday, before spilling over into other sites, such as Icanhascheezburger.

Excerpt from The Daily Pennsylvanian:

The most primal versions of LOLcats appeared years ago on an Internet image board called 4chan, when Saturdays were designated as “Caturdays” – a special day to post photos of cats.

Excerpt from The Boston Phoenix:

Though the original lolcat meme, called “Caturday,” first started in the 4chan message boards years ago, I Can Has Cheezburger was instrumental in breaking the animal-based image macros and the phonetic “lolspeak” vernacular into the mainstream.

This practice has been expanded, and the idea that “every day is Caturday” has caught on as well.

The observence of Caturday can also be found on Icanhazcheezburger.com.

[this article is a stub and can be improved by finding the first instance of Caturday]

About

Solo Regiment (솔로부대 / a.k.a People’s Party of Loneliness) is a modern Korean slang playfully referring to an anonymous, ad-hoc group of single bachelors and bachelorettes on the web. First coined in 2003 by a group of users at DCinside (a Korean equivalent of 2Chan, 4Chan,etc), the term was initially used in DCinside community to humorize the lonely, loveless lives of twenty and thirtysomethings and quickly spread across other forums, inspiring a handful of internet memes.

Colloquial Usage of “Regiment”

The popular use of “Regiment (부대)” as a unit to describe any specific demographic (ex: Madam Kim regiment, Necktie Regiment) can be attributed to a strange lingo/culture bred through S. Korea’s all-male mandatory military service. Somewhat inevitably, a military rank system of the Solo Regiment was introduced circa 2006 (According to Naver.com), further spreading the lulz.

“We are the Invincible Solo Regiment”

Among the earliest (and perhaps the greatest) lulz to emerge from the Solo Regiment campaign was an image macro meme. Under the tongue-in-cheek slogan “We Are the Invincible Regiment of Solo,” dozens of WWII-era propaganda posters were modified into over-glorified images of lonely, loveless single across the country. More in the photos section.

Find the Hidden Solo!

“Find the Hidden Solo” is a series of textbookish watercolors featuring a lonely single hidden amongst merry couples a la Where’s Waldo. Originally uploaded by a Korean children’s book illustrator on her Cyworld page, the images first became popular through sharing in the network and later surfaced on popular image boards and BBS sites.

Black Day & Raids on Monthly Couple Holidays

According to Wikipedia, Black Day (April 14) is a South Korean informal tradition for single people (a.k.a. Unit Solo/Solo Regiment, lee: 솔로부대) to get together and eat Jajangmyeon (white noodles with black bean sauce). The idea is that those who did not give or receive gifts on Valentine’s Day (February 14) or White Day (March 14) can get together and eat noodles while commiserating their singledom. Basically, it’s a second chance day.

There is a similar equivalent in the West called Singles Awareness Day, which is celebrated by singles on February 14 as an alternative to Valentine’s Day.

As an anonymous online collective, those identifying themselves with the Solo Regiment conduct mass pranks and raids on popular websites, especially on couple-oriented holidays like Valentine’s Day and Christmas Eve. In some East Asian cultures, Christmas is popularly recognized as a romantic holiday and there are many other made-up “couples gift-exchange day”, including Pepero Day and White Day.

People’s Party of Loneliness

As the Regiment’s popularity continued to grow, a small group of the Solo Regiment reportedly split and started another ad-hoc organizaiton called “People’s Party of Loneliness,” as an obvious parody of the Communist Party. The purpose of the party is detailed in their “Soloist Manifesto.”

Pancake Bunny

Origin

Pancake Bunny or Waffle Bunny was a rabbit from Japan named Oolong who was trained by his owner Hironori Akutagawa, to balance objects on his head. After a few years of posting these to his website, his images were discovered by a website called Syberpunk and rose to national mainstream attention in the U.S. a picture of Oolong was featured in the story “Prospecting For Gold Among the Photo Blogs” published in The New york Times on May 25th, 2003.

Over the course of Oolong’s short life, Akutagawa took hundreds of photographs of the rabbit balancing a wide variety of small, light objects on its head. Oolong passed on January 7th, 2003.

Common Appearance and Usage

The Pancake Bunny typically sighted with the text “I have no idea what you’re talking about… so here’s a bunny with a pancake on its head.” This is a dismissive respons similar to “My hair is a bird. Your argument is invalid” or the simpler “tl;dr.”

Due to the moderately impressive feat being performed by a cute animal, and the dismissive tone of the caption, the image macro was a hit. Variations feature the bunny photoshopped to appear to be balancing other objects on his head, or other animals with pancakes on their heads.

Flash Mob

About

Flash mobs are a form of performance art in which a group of people are coordinated via some online communication medium, usually a blog, twitter, or mass text message, and arrange to meet at a central location, usually to the bewilderment of other bystanders. Though they can sometimes serve a political purpose, they are generally for the amusement of the participants and bystanders.

Flash mobs are an unusual meme in that the actual artifact is not on the internet, but actually takes place in real life. However, the coordination occurs on the internet, and many more people watch the performances online than in real life.

Examples

As flash mobs started before widespread streaming video on the internet, most of the early flash mobs were only documented in photographs and on blogs.

One early example is outlined on CNN, in which over 300 people arrived at the same bookstore and began asking about nonexistent book titles.

A swedish flash mob is organized shortly after the death of Michael Jackson, performing his iconic dance from “Beat It”

Variations

Improv Everywhere

Improv Everywhere is a comedy group loosely affiliated with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, that uses a blog to arrange large-scale performances or “missions” intended to amuse the participants while baffling and ultimately entertaining bystanders.

In one prominent example they coordinated over 200 participants to go into Grand Central Station individually and at a freeze for a fixed amount of time all at the same cue.

Pillow Fight

Pillow Fight flash mobs are also very common, in which participants are invited to bring their own pillows and engage in a pillow fight.

Critical Mass

Critical Mass is a bicycling held simultaneously in many major cities in which a large number of cyclists meet at a set location and time and travel as a group through city or town streets on bikes.

Break Out In Song

Break Out In Song is a group that coordinates amateur singers and dancers into large scale recreations of famous musical numbers at notable New York City landmarks. Here is an example in which hundreds of participants posing as tourists at the USS Intrepid suddenly break out into a rendition of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes”, complete with a tap dancing sequence.

Corporate Subversion

Several PR firms have tried to use this meme to promote products or to gain internet buzz. Trident Unwrapped was an internet media campaign that arranged several choreographed group scenes in high profile landmarks.

A Belgian television station promoting a new reality tv series staged a large performance of “Do Re Mi” from “The Sound of Music” in the Antwerp train station.

Mainstream Media

Flash mobs have gained the attention of mainstream media sources too:
In the Weeds Season 5 premiere Nancy Botwin is hanging out at a food court when the crowd spontaneously breaks into dance. She asks a cellphone-video-capturing teenager what it’s all about and he says “because it’s cool”.

In Law & Order: SVU, flash mobs are a major plot device in the episode “Authority”. A clever suspect arranges a flash mob in the style of Improv Everywhere, in order to create a distraction during which he evades the police.

For More Information:

In addition to Improv Everywhere, Charlie Todd runs www.urbanprankster.com, and the Urban Prankster Network, a ning-based social-networking community based around finding other link-minded individuals in their local areas who would like to organize flash mobs and other participatory art projects.

Trolling

This is an introductory/supplementary entry to Trolling and related online behaviors.

About

A troll is someone who will state something only with the intention of stirring up controversy. Typicaly the statement is so absurd that only the most noobish of noobs will get offended and respond.

For example, one might purposefuly spel things wrong or use poor grammar, knowing that this will drive some people crazy, eliciting a response.

A more advanced troll might even spell things wrong in a post criticizing the spelling in someone else’s post, hoping to elicit an angry counter-reaction. Numerous forums and Usenet boards are dedicated to the fine art of what the NYTimes called “manipulating other people’s emotional equilibrium” [trying to remember for sure if they should get the credit]

Trolling can be considered a form of cyberbullying and in video game circles the practice is often called “griefing”.

Why Troll?

Successful trolling brings lulz — pleasure at the expense of others. By participating in flamewars with a troll they become your puppetmaster, manipulating your emotions for their own enjoyment.

Wikipedia has an overview of research behind the human motivation to troll & acquire lulz.

If you respond to a troll, you are said to be feeding the troll. You’ve got better things to do than feed trolls… so keep your coolface on.

Trolling By Promotional Vector

A common problem is determining if someone is sincerely crazy/idiotic/racist/etc. on purpose… or if they are trolling.

This controversy often fuels the popularity of the original content so it tends to go unmoderated. The true troll stirrs up controversy over something’s legitimacy in order to fuel this popularity as part of their original intention.

Boxxy is widely considered an ‘accidental troll’, containing many features of a troll but w/o the purposefulness and true intent needed to make her an actual troll

debate over the legitimacy of WoW Freakout/Account Crusher accuses OP of trolling

Numerous derivative memes have also sprung up around communicating to others to beware that a troll is present in a forum thread or conversation.

Trolling In The Wild

Tom Green’s call-in talk show is often trolled

The mythical Gold Membership Required

Trollface/Coolface is a meme originating with a comic depicting ‘what trolls want you to believe’ vs. ‘what is actually happening’

I’m 12 years old and what is this???

Obviously incendiary subjects like 9/11

Recut Movie Trailers / Movie Trailer Remix

About

Recut Movie Trailers (aka ‘Movie Trailer Remixes’ and ‘Misleading Trailers’) are parody videos created from content from the original movie or trailer that use creative recutting of the video footage along with altering the accompanying music and voiceovers to imply that the genre or topic of the movie is greatly different than the original.

Origin

The earliest known example of re-cut movie trailers was made by a NYU film student in 2003. Controversially titled “Kill Christ”, the short clip combined the footage of Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ with the music and style of Quentin Tarantino in Kill Bill series.

In 2005, prior to the broad adoption of youtube, Robert Ryang created a video for a competition sponsored by the New York chapter of the Association of Independent Creative Editor, the result was a parody of “The Shining”, re-cut to look like a family friendly film, complete with a cheesy voiceover and Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill”.

The video was hosted on his company’s website, and though he only sent the link to his own friends, the viral appeal of the video caused the link to be forwarded and the company’s webserver was overloaded. The video is now hosted on youtube.

As the creator of one of the first traceable viral videos, Ryang was profiled in a New York Times article on the growing phenomenon of internet videos.

Google Search Box Suggestions

Origin

On August 25, 2008, Google added a feature to their search box that offers searches similar to the one you’re typing. This feature works in real-time, so unfinished searches bring up different results. Given this new feature and the realative ignorance of the general public, it came as no surprise when the suggestion box started to display odd queries.

About

Similar to Make Your Own Album Cover, Search Box Suggestions is not a meme that is posted on forums or made into Youtube videos. It’s more like a game you play when you’re bored. You go to Google and type in unfinished phrases, like: “Why is there” and “Why cant i” and see what comes up. You’re bound to find something really strange sooner or later. People also enter searches in hopes of the spell check to display another funny result. (ex: someone types in “three gay fags” google says, “Did You Mean: the Jonas Brothers?”) While mainly for the enjoyment of the individual, many blogs and websites post their top list of funny Google searches.

Photo-a-Day

About

When he was 19, photographer Noah Kalina took a picture of himself everyday. He did this for 6 years, from January 11, 2000, to July 31, 2006. The total? 2356 days. Then, he made a montage of every picture, with an original piano score by his then-girlfriend, Carly Commando. It resulted in this video uploaded to Youtube on August 27th. :

While Noah’s video is the most popular example of the “picture a day” meme, he was not the first to get his video on Youtube. 2007 Webby Award nominee Ahree Lee actually posted her video on August 11, 2006; just 16 days prior to Noah.

By September of 2006 Jonathan Keller revealed Living My Life Faster, a compilation of 8 years of his life.

While Lee’s video came prior, and Keller’s work encompassed two years more than Noah’s, Noah takes a photo of himself every day for six years broke through the mass media wall and was featured on CBS’ Evening News…

CBS Evening News with Katie Couric from Noah K. on Vimeo.

The video enjoyed great popularity, as it was seen in many outlets; from commercials by Time Warner, to the New York Times, to ABC’s Good Morning America. Today, Noah’s pic-a-day video has over 12 million views.

Noah’s video eventually ended up parodied on The Simpsons, Season 19, Episode 9 entitled “Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind”

Variations

Some simply copied the concept, taking a picture of themselves everyday for any length of time, while other YouTube users decided to tweak the concept a little bit. Some decided to show the progression of their pregnancy, everyday.

Or with the product of said pregnancy.

Some did this with their household pet.

And, finally, photographer Eric Solheim did it with a landscape.

fsjal

AKA “Anticipation Guy”

About

FSJAL is a simple exploitable cartoon character, arms bent in anticipation, eyes pointing up in eagerness. The character in this prolific meme originates from a comic entitled SMASH BROTERS or ‘BROTERSTORY’ posted to DeviantArt March 27, 2008 by the user burgertime.

The comic was reposted to 4Chan’s /v/ Video Games board (see Cell 24 below) over a year later.

The image would later to be posted again in a simple 4chan image contest, saying “post [id] ending in 69 names this meme.” The post ending in 69 simply stated “fsjal”. A meme was born. Due to it’s highly editable and simplistic design, fsjal quickly grew.

The image of “Toon Link” had already been a popular avatar. And then on July 25th, 2009, the fateful naming contest occurred:

According to a DeviantArt journal post from August 10, 2009, the creator of what would become fsjal is well aware that his comic has become a meme and appears upset about its extreme popularity solely because a majority of the people who use it do not know of its origins and the fact that it has been branded as a “4chan” comic.

He refers to “fsjal” simply as “excited toon link”

About

The act of placing one’s face in one’s hands, or “facepalming” is a gesture of nonverbal-communication common among many cultures. The action conveys a message of dismay and is often a reaction toward someone’s momentary lapse of logic, judgement, or memory. This reaction may be directed toward another person or be self-deprecating.

One of the most popular facepalm images around is one of Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek the Next Generation, clutching his face in disbelief.

Songsmith

Intro

Microsoft Songsmith is an application by Microsoft’s research wing. According to Microsoft, “Songsmith generates musical accompaniment to match a singer’s voice. Just choose a musical style, sing into your PC’s microphone, and Songsmith will create backing music for you.” This description amply describes the program’s function, but does not explain what it is about Songsmith that has turned it into a meme. Two things turned it into a meme: a hilarious awful promo video gone viral, and a hilarious awful application available for free download.

Part 1: The Promo Video

On January 8th, Microsoft released the application and a bunch of support material, including a promo video they called: Everyone Has A Song Inside. While many would argue the video disproves this aphorism, the video’s plot involves a man (played by Microsoft engineer Dan Morris) who is struggling to find an angle for advertising some glow in the dark towels. While complaining about this in his kitchen in the morning, his eerily chipper daughter begins to sing. She’s using songsmith on what is pretty clearly a Macbook Pro covered in stickers. It remains unknown exactly why Microsoft used an Apple laptop in the commercial, but the crowd on YouTube loved it. To quote user rmbgi, “I thinks this works better with a Macbook pro :) The apple logo is covered with stickers LOL…” Anyway, the dad goes and sits with his daughter. He is blown away by the quality of the program, and, perhaps not understanding that a free trial is available for download, steals the laptop from his daughter.

The video cuts to the next scene, which is in a coffee shop. He has just finished recording the first take of his glow-in-the-dark towel jingle, and begins to play it back. Right as he hits play, a rockstar (played by Microsoft Engineer Sumit Basu) and a waitress (neither of which seem to have any respect for his privacy) watch over his shoulder. After a few bars, the rock star says the classic, “Microsoft, huh? So it’s pretty easy to use?”

The rock star later records his own song in the coffee shop, and the man uses songsmith to create a jingle for the glow-in-the-dark towels, and everyone goes home happy. It is a huge success, and everyone lives happily ever after. This video in itself would have been viral, but what turned this into a meme was the fact that users could download the app and play with it themselves.

Part II: ___________ by ________ (Songsmith Remix!)

Users did download Songsmith. Unsurprisingly, it is not very good at what it is supposed to do. But uploading videos of yourself singing into a computer and the computer butchering it doesn’t do the app’s suckitude justice. That is why people instead isolated the vocals track from various famous songs and fed them into Songsmith. Songsmith then does what it was programmed to do, which might as well have been “prove that Songsmith stinks.” Songsmith Remixes abound on YouTube, and the videos help turn this phenomenon into a meme.
