“¿Juay De Rito?” is a Spanish catchphrase originally quoted by popular Mexican news anchor Joaquín Lopez Dóriga during an interview with Anthony Hopkins regarding his 2011 supernatural thriller film The Rite.
On February 15th, Welsh actor Anthony Hopkins appeared on Televisa’s popular news program El Noticiero con Joaquín López-Dóriga to answer some questions about his upcoming supernatural thriller film The Rite.
In the interview, the anchor began asking questions in his native Spanish, hoping for the real-time English translation to kick in, but ended up experiencing audio technical difficulties. Originally intended to mean “Why The Rite?” as to ask what motivated Hopkins to join the cast, Dóriga’s heavy accent resulted in the highly exploitable, hard-to-decipher phrase “Juay De Rito?”
The phrase quickly developed into a viral joke on the Mexican web, including the launch of official website on February 16th and unofficial t-shirts for sale. Within days, “Juay De Rito?” received national media coverage, including People magazine.
