Night Market Life(夜市人生) is a Taiwanese-based soap opera that has spawned video parodies in Asia. Various short scenes of the show gained attention as they are overly dramatic or are just simply humorous to the audience.

The show follows the lives of members in a family that sells medicine soup in a night market. The husband’s mistress challenges the place of the original wife as they moved in together. The husband’s close friend, also the boss of the night market, gets involved for he had a relationship in the past with the husband’s wife. Their grown-up children also form a love hexagon.

Origin

The show was produced by Taiwanese broadcasting company Formosa TV and ran from 22 December 2009 to 19 July 2011. The numbers of episodes total up to 410. The show was aired on prime time and known as the “Eight-o’clock drama”, and is very popular among older people. This drama serial is also broadcasted in other Asian countries like Singapore.

Flying Michael

In this scene from episode 45, a character from the shows gets knocked by a car and was launched into the air due to force of the collision. This scene is famous for its absurdity and hilarity.

Jin Jufu's grief

A scene from episode 64 where the character damaged a Mandarin orange out of grief and anger is popular for its dramatic portrayal of emotion.

On 22 April 2010, Youtube user, g878ak47 uploaded a parody video. This video has gained over a million views presently.

It is also notable that Night Market Life is a subject of discussion in the Japanese community. Several MAD videos inspired by the show can also be found on YouTube. Such video were uploaded to YouTube as early as in year 2010.

On 6 March 2010, YouTube user iMicPan uploaded a video based on Flying Michael with the soundtrack from Doraemon. This video has gained more than 300 thousand views presently.
