About
smooooch・∀・ is a popular soundtrack from the Japanese arcade music video game Beatmania IIDX 16: Empress which is produced by KONAMI as a part of BEMANI line.[1]
Since the end of 2008, the cute dance animation of three princesses for this happy hardcore track has gained favor with many people. And, a lot of fan art and parody videos have been posted to the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND) and the Japanese social network service for illustators pixiv.
Origin
smooooch・∀・ was written by a Japanese composer/DJ Kosuke Saito a.k.a kors k[2], and the animation for this song was created by a Japanese illustrator Maya Takayama, better known as her alias MAYA. This song was first included in Beatmania IIDX 16 released for Japanese arcade in November 19th, 2008.
This song is also included to other music video games in BEMANI series : DanceDanceRevolution X2, REFLEC BEAT and Pop’n Music.
Spread
Soon after its first release, this cute animation got much attention among game players and some of internet users. Then, similar to Caramelldansen and other memes of dance animated videos, this animation was quickly set to the subject of many fanfics, and video remixes.
In NND, one of the earliest hit remixed video was posted in December 7th, 2008.[3] This video featured Rin Kaenbyou from Touhou Project. This video below is the complete version posted in later.[4]
Like this video, video creators replace the princesses with characters from various anime and video games. More than 800 videos related to this song have been posted to NND[5], and many of them are also uploaded to YouTube.[6]
Many pixiv users also jumped into this meme’s bandwagon. Over 1300 fan arts and parody illustrations have been posted to there.[7]
