About

The Black Messiah "If Your Skin Isn't Brown, You Need My Permission To Speak" is a viral video by TikToker @the_black_messiah_ in which she tells white viewers that they need to ask her permission before commenting on her videos if their "skin isn't brown." The contentious video was posted to TikTok and deleted in late June 2023 but gained viral spread on social media, sparking debates and reactions online.

Origin

On or around June 22nd, 2023, now-deleted TikToker @the_black_messiah_ posted a video in which she tells non-POC viewers to ask her permission to comment on her videos, saying their opinions are not wanted or relevant. She tells non-POC viewers to comment asking for permission to speak, then await her response. She ends the video, "You people have been talking way too much for way too long and your time is officially up. It is Black power forever."

The video gained an unknown number of views before it was deleted. It was then reposted by Twitter[1] user @ClownWorld_ that day, captioned, "she seems nice," garnering over 31,000 likes in a day (shown below). It is unclear if the video and account were deleted on purpose or by TikTok moderation.

If you are not Black, if your skin is not brown, if you are not melanated, then you do not have the right to come under my videos talking back to my people. Your opinions are not wanted, nor are they relevant. So why do you feel like you need to come and keep saying something to my people. You need to ask me my permission before you speak or comment on my videos. You come under my video and say, "Lord, may I please have your permission to say something," then you wait for me to give you my permission before you start tapping, moving your pasty little fingers around on my page. You people have been talking way too much for way too long and your time is officially up. It is Black power forever.

Spread

The video inspired reactions on TikTok and Twitter as it spread online in late June 2023, with many negative towards her message and opinion. For example, on June 22nd, 2023, TikToker[2] @the_jefferymead posted a response calling the video "gross," garnering over 234,000 views in a day (shown below).

The viral video also garnered coverage from some sites in the following days. On June 23rd, 2023, Dexerto[3] published an article about the video, notably including the response from @the_black_messiah_ following the controversy in which she said:

"Your fathers and your father’s fathers have been saying the same exact thing- 'white is good and pure while Black is evil and bad.' This is why when you look at me you don’t see me being worthy of being the wife of Lord Jesus."
