A marine biologist named Christopher Mah shared the photo online of a real yellow square-shaped sponge and pink starfish next to one another, which was taken by a remotely operated deep-sea device. It returned this picture, which amused millions when they saw the striking resemblance, leading to a resurgence in memes based on the series.
