Pete Davidson Is Now Having People Sign NDA's At His Stand Up Shows
In 2019, it's not uncommon for comedians to ask audience members to submit their phones to prevent leaked recordings of stand up material that will later be filmed for a special. What is not common, is having your audience sign an NDA that prevents them from even giving their opinion on comedic material they paid to actually go and see, especially when that NDA comes equipped with a $1 million fine.
Unfortunately, if you purchased tickets to see SNL cast member Pete Davidson perform stand up comedy at the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco on November 27, you were asked to do just that. When the Hollywood Reporter leaked this news, Twitter users couldn't help but scoff at the demands Davidson was setting and soon a new debate about whether or not comedians could place such restrictions commenced.
Those who attended the event came on Twitter to let everyone know they couldn't talk about it.
saw pete davidson tonight but don’t ask me about it because i signed an nda pic.twitter.com/R8QJrMTMpM

Some were willing to throw their relatives under the bus.
My dad did in fact see Pete Davidson on tour and sign the nda and surrender his cellphone but he told me all the jokes afterwards!!!!

arrest him!!!!!!!!!
Fear was even a theme, especially when you're being asked to pay $1 million.
Living in fear I’ll somehow violate my Pete Davidson NDA pic.twitter.com/ETqUjCmzTN

While others were happy to violate the clause to actually see what would happen.
I am willing to violate the NDA that #PeteDavidson had fans sign as I did not sign my name! 😂😂 #NDA #didntcheckID #snuckthrough #loophole #drunk

Of course, tweets full of disdain for the comedian's decision came quickly.
Imagine wasting money on tickets to see Pete Davidson. Then imagine signing an NDA so you “shall not give any interviews, offer any opinions or critiques, or otherwise participate in any form whatsoever (including but not limited to blogs, any social networking etc.)

Some users were even thinking about coming up with a strategy should anyone be fined for leaking their opinions on his material.
Starting a GoFundMe to break the pete Davidson nda

But mostly users thought the comedian was being ridiculous.
Am I still allowed to say Pete Davidson is a little bitch?
— Bridget Phetasy (@BridgetPhetasy) December 1, 2019
They even tried to come up with reasons why he went with the NDA in the first place.
so I see that pete Davidson from snl has an nda to get into his shows saying you cant social media about it. I don't see the issue because he not even funn…… oh. I get it. smart play pete

Some were just thankful that a decision was made being for them.
Pete Davidson is asking people to sign a $1,000,000 NDA before going to his stand up show and an easy decision just got easier. pic.twitter.com/S1wjoBnc1L

As some users pointed out, the NDA would never be able to prevent other people who didn't attend the show to not criticize him.
The NDA #PeteDavidson is making fans sign before his shows is, quite frankly, stupid and overbearing. Dude, you’re not even funny. You’re gonna get criticized no matter how you try to stifle it.

One user even compared him to Martin Scorsese.
Dear god Martin Scorsese trying to police how people watch his film, Pete Davidson making fans sign an NDA so they can’t critique his comedy. If you make art people get to decide how to consume it and react to it! Maybe men should stop making stuff there i said it

But some did come to Davidson's defense.
#PeteDavidson asking his fans to sign a NDA is up to the fans.. if they don’t mind then they don’t mind.. But clearly it’s an overreaction but #PeteDavidson has had some tough clips expose him as a jerk.. so cut that off by letting people know .. “Stfu” & NDA says that #dailypop pic.twitter.com/ul3q8WuFcq

Pete Davidson making people sign $1m NDA's isn't about ego, it's about doing what he can in order to protect his art. So don't blame him, blame the idiots who, over time have ruined it for the loyal and respectful fans.

Me @ all the bbs still whining about an NDA agreement to a show they’ll never get to go to, simply because it’s attached to the name Pete Davidson. His tours sell out for a reason. And just going off your reactions, he’s doing waaayy better than you, hunty. pic.twitter.com/TWvLc2gmmu

I love that Pete Davidson has a $1 million NDA for people attending his show. That’s how you know it was good.
— liz (@ERiecken) December 1, 2019
Perhaps Davidson could take a tip from one of the greats.
This is probly an "Okay Boomer" for me, but did anyone tell Pete Davidson that when Andy Kaufman wanted to work on new material he didnt make people sign an NDA, he just put on a disguise?
