Sad Cat Dance

What Is The 'Sad Cat Dance' And Why Does It Remind You Of Ankha Zone?

The redraw trend has really blown up in 2022, with many of the top memes being a variation of redrawing a previously established trend or idea. The Sad Cat Dance manages to both be a redraw and an expansion on a uniquely creative idea. The meme trend is simply having a character be offered cat ears and tails by a related character (not by blood, hopefully) and being begged to dance in a specific fashion while a remixed version of the song Gypsy In My Mind plays in the background. The whole trend straight oozes "Minus 8" energy, with it's quick repetitive movement and colorful backgrounds.

Where Does 'Sad Cat Dance' Come From?

Sad Cat Dance's history begins with Chainsaw Man, a popular manga that just recently enjoyed the start of its anime adaptation. Within the manga, a character known as Kobeni finds herself in a situation where she's forced to dance in a Dance Dance Revolution game. This led to the video game creator Benedique uploading a video of a dancing game they created, called "Chainsaw Man Dance Game," to YouTube, which featured the character Kobeni dancing while crying sadly on January 16th, 2021.

After Ankha Zone took the internet by storm, it was up to animator Ha Anime to upload a video titled "Not Kobeni dance, but let's still make her dance," which featured Kobeni now in cat ears, with her dancing being based on Ankha Zone. Kobeni's crying, mixed with the cat ears and recognizable dance moves is what solidified the Sad Cat Dance into a sustainable redraw trend, with people being able to swap their own OC or other beloved characters into Kobeni's place.

How Is Sad Cat Dance Used Online?

Sad Cat Dance is most often used as other redraw memes are, by taking the base model of the character and then doing slight animations to it. A tutorial of how to create a very basic Sad Cat Dance was uploaded to YouTube in which only the phone apps Gacha Club, Capcut, and IbisPaint X were used.

What Is The Song Used In Sad Cat Dance?

The song used in the Sad Cat Dance trend is a remix of two other popular electronic music songs. The first is a song by The Bucketheads called "The Bomb," and the second is a song called "Gypsy Woman" by Crystal Waters, with them both being mashed together to create the Gypsy In My Mind audio that is used in Sad Cat Dance.
