'Jeopardy!' Inexplicably Brought Up Gabby Petito's Murder To Get Contestants To Answer 'Alligator,' So Here's Some Other Questions They Could Use In The Future
Jeopardy! truly baffled its audience last night when it inexplicably brought up the murder of Gabby Petito by her boyfriend Brian Laundrie to get an answer that had literally no connection to the case.
In its category "The A-List," in which all the answers began with the letter A (and already not a good look considering the question), Mayim Balik read an "answer" that stated:
"In 2021, fugitive Brian Laundrie ended his days in Florida's Myakkahatchee Creek area, home to these long and toothy critters."
The answer is "Alligators."
Brian Laundrie, who confessed to killing Gabby Petito before committing suicide in Florida, was featured as an answer on Celebrity @Jeopardy last night. It read, “Brian Laundrie ended his days,” referencing his suicide. Suicide featured on a game show. pic.twitter.com/WecxFhYStl

The Gabby Petito/Brian Laundrie case gripped the internet last year, as for weeks, Petito was missing while Laundrie was suspected of murdering her. It became a massively viral true crime story online, as social media users dissected any footage they could find to attempt to find Gabby and later Brian. Gabby was ultimately found dead and Laundrie committed suicide in October 2021.
With that in mind, Jeopardy's! clue struck many as unnecessarily morbid or inconsiderate, as there were truly an infinite number of ways to get to "Alligator" without mentioning a recent, high-profile murder that affected many lives. Petito's family was also not a fan of the segment and feel an apology is owed.
However, if this is the route Jeopardy! wants to take with its questions in the future, we've come up with some ideas for clues they are free to use in a similar vein.
