About

The Crown's Princess Diana Bashful Reaction is a memorable clip from the 2020 Netflix drama television series The Crown. The episode, which recreates a real-life event, shows Prince Charles proposing to Princess Diana. When reporters asked the couple about the proposal, Princess Diana makes a series of coy and nervous looks around the room. Online, people use clips of Diana's reaction to express shyness and nervousness.

Origin

On February 24th, 1981, Prince Charles and Princess Diana participated in an interview about their then-recent engagement. When asked about the proposal, Diana can be seen nervously laughing and looking around the room to avoid questions and the cameras (shown below).

On November 15th, 2020, Netflix released the fourth season of The Crown.[1] In the third episode, "Fairytale," the show dramatizes the proposal and subsequent interview. The following morning, Twitter user @WayneDavid81 posted a clip of Diana's reaction with the caption "Me trying to decide what to have for dinner." The tweet received more than 3.5 million views, 500 likes and 150 retweets in less than two days (shown below).

Spread

That day, people began sharing the video and adding their own captions. For example, on November 16th, 2020, Twitter[2] user @hannahtindle tweeted the video with the caption, "Me on a Zoom call pretending I’m listening and not just looking at myself." The tweet received more than 173,000 likes and 23,000 retweets in less than two days (shown below, left). Throughout the day, others shared variations on the meme (examples below, center and right).

Several media outlets covered the meme, including BuzzFeed, [3] Junkee[4] and more.
