Memes of the Week: July 29th, 2019
The car is on fire, and there's no driver at the wheel, the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides and a dark wind blows. Yes folks, it's time for the memes of the week!
This week, Senator Kamala Harris proposed a byzantine student-loan forgiveness plan that was roundly mocked, Bernie Sanders returned to his memeing ways with the line of the second Democratic Presidential Debate and a trolling Redditor's old post gave Twitter a new snowclone.
Kamala Harris' Student Loan Forgiveness Plan
On July 27th, Kamala Harris attempted to rally her base by laying out her student-loan forgiveness plan. While competitors Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have proposed student loan forgiveness for most, if not all, Americans, Kamala Harris unveiled a student-loan forgiveness plan for roughly five Americans.
This Rube Goldberg-like path to student loan forgiveness led towards mockery rather than excitement, as somehow Twitter users were not rallied by the infinite clauses in Kamala's plan. Parodies were swift and brutal, as Twitter users imagined the absurd steps they'd implement in their plans were they running for President:
With a rough showing in the Democratic debates, it was overall a tough week for Kamala Harris and her campaign, though the world did enjoy some fine memes out of it.
I Wrote the Damn Bill
Speaking of the debates, Bernie Sanders got the most memorable line of the affair when he absolutely obliterated human Bethesda NPC Tim Ryan. While explaining the benefits of Medicare for All, Sanders was interrupted by Ryan, who attempted to insert himself into the debate by saying "You don't know that, Bernie." Sanders, unfazed, brushed Ryan aside by saying, "I do know that. I wrote the damn bill!"
Veterans of the 2016 Election that happened 159 years ago will remember that Sanders was quite the meme star in the Democratic Primary, but his meme presence has been relatively light so far in the 2020 campaign. However, his KO punch brought him back to the internet's spotlight. It's good to have the Berndog back.
My Subs Have Unionized
Last April, a Redditor trolled /r/relationship_advice with a ludicrous but well-written question about what he, a dominant, should do about his five polyamorous submissives who approached him with a list of demands. Even though the post was quickly deleted, it found new life on Twitter when a user found it and said "This is SENDING ME."
This helped kicked off the dominant Twitter snowclone for the week, as people imagined other groups humorously organized against the tyranny of their doms. Some used obvious targets, like the Democratic candidate field, while others got more creative. For my money, the best example takes aim at Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Finn Wolfhard's Middle Finger
It is very hard to be punk and a child star at the same time, but goddamn did Finn Wolfhard do just that when he flipped the bird in an old picture from his earlier Stranger Things days.
The picture quickly became the ultimate badass reaction image, serving as a more chaotic, attitude-filled counterpart to You Know I Had to Do It To Em. The kid may be, like 12, but damn if he doesn't have the swagger of Johnny Cash.
