About

Last.fm is a music website that is known for it's features, including Groups, and The Audioscrobbler.

Origin

The original Last.fm was created by Felix Miller, Martin Stiksel, Michael Breidenbruecker and Thomas Willomitzer as an internet radio station and a music community. It received fair acclaim and was nominated for the Europrix Student Awards in 2002.[1] The group started to work with Richard Jones, creator of the Audioscrobbler, and had it fully implemented in the site by 2003. On August 9th 2005, the two officially merged.

During April of 2007, it was rumored that negotiations with CBS were made to purchase the site for $449 million dollars.[2] On May 30th, 2007, it was announced that the site was purchased for $140 million, and that the management team would stay intact.[3]

Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Lil Wayne and accept that he is the greatest musician of all time, even greater than John Lennon!" At this moment, a 90s kid, true rock fan, a man with good taste who was born in the wrong generation who had listened to Queen Greatest Hits a hundred times, stood up, revealing his Dark Side of The Moon t-shirt and Cheetos stains, held up a picture of Freddie Mercury - ordered to be banned on school premises. "What race is this icon, ruiner of music?" The arrogant professor smirked quite Bieberly and smugly replied "white, therefore bad, you stupid hipster!" wrong. Freddy Mercury was not a white Briton. If he was white, and what you said was real then he woudn't be a Farsi." The host was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and his One Direction tour tickets. He stormed out of the room listening to modern rap the same cRap (which consists of nothing but the world n---- over and over again) which allows black people to regurgitates and reinforce black stereotypes. There is no doubt that at this point our professor, Harry "F--- Pink Floyd" Gaga, wished he had pulled himself up by his mainstream FM radio player antenna and become more than an MTV host killing music. He wished so much that he had a vinyl copy of Led Zeppelin IV to finally be in le right generation, but he himself had demanded that it not be played in the radio to oppress 90s

A Group is a feature where users can join a group along with other fellow users. Currently, the largest group is "I Still Buy CDs" with over 76,000 members.[4]

The Audioscrobbler

The Audioscrobbler is a feature that records the music a user listens to and with that information, gives recommendations on artists, songs, and users with similar tastes. It was originally created by Richard Jones while attended the University of Southampton School of Electronics and Computer Science in the UK.[5]

Popularity

The site is currently just below the top 1,500 according to ALEXA ranking as of June 2015[1], with 29.9% of their views coming from the Unite States.

2015 Update

In August of 2015, Last.fm announced a complete overhaul of the site, making it more accessible for mobile users. The update caused many of the main users who used the site, specifically users from /mu/, to leave or simply delete their account. The update also caused the popular chart making add-on, Tapmusic[2] to no longer work properly, as well as many disliked updates to the site software, such as the removal of groups and an overall site focus shift of albums to tracks.
