Spaghetti Girl is a online slang term designing a woman who believes herself to be heterosexual, until a sexual experience with another woman makes her realize she is attracted to women. This expression comes from an allegory with spaghetti, which are "straight until they get wet". Since 2017, it became mostly associated online with a double screenshot from the anime A Scum's Wish.

Origin

Although the exact origin of that expression is hard to pinpoint, its entry on Urban Dictionary^[1] dates as far back as December 38th, 2004. The original definition given to it is as follows (sic):

a term used for girls who don't know they are bisexual until the make out with a chick. it means a girl who is straight until you get her wet.(like spaghetti)

Scum's Wish Variants

On March 4th, 2017, a double screenshot of the third episode of the anime Scum's Wish was posted^[1] on the Facebook page J-List; it gained over 10,000 reactions and got shared over 2,300 times in 8 years. The screenshots show two of the characters: Hanabi Yasuraoka, in her bed, topped by Sanae Ebato (alias "Ecchan"); they come from a scene where the latter confesses her love to the former. This picture is completed by fake subtitles referencing the Spaghetti Girl trope:

- Ecchan, you know I'm straight.
- So's spaghetti, until it gets wet.

This version of the meme became the most popular one, being subsequently used in various memes, edits and redraws.
