About

Brime is a rumored video game streaming platform that emerged in the wake of Mixer shutting down and Dr DisRespect's 2020 Twitch Ban. Although conspiracy theories surrounding Brime allude to it being a potential competitor to Twitch, the platform currently exists only as a Twitter account with no active website or domain, leading some to believe it’s merely a hoax. The platform joined Twitter in June 2020 and is its only current online presence.

History

On June 22nd, 2020, Brime launched its Twitter[1] account (shown below) and began posting various aspects of what it hopes to bring to the platform, along with the statement “#Brime a new streaming service. We believe gaming is fun. See you soon. We don’t have a site YET.” Following the announcement that Microsoft was shutting down Mixer, combined with rumors that major streamers such as Ninja, and Shroud may be planning to join the new platform, interest in Brime surged online and the Twitter account reached over 86,000 followers in roughly a week.

On June 29th, 2020, Twitter[6] user CrouchJumplnc uploaded a video to his feed discussing Brime as a new streaming site. The video (seen below) received over 62,000 views, 550 likes and 80 retweets.

Brime Rumors and Conspiracy Theories

In late June 2020, rumors and conspiracies began running rampant online after some theorized that with Mixer shutting down and Dr DisRespect being permanently banned from Twitch, this meant that some of the streaming industry’s biggest names were allegedly launching their own, brand new service, potentially under Google or Spotify. Due to several factors that many claimed as proof, including Brime’s launch on Twitter shortly after Mixer’s closure, the fact that Brime followed only a few key streamers (Shroud, Ninja, etc.) and Dr DisRespect being banned for mysterious reasons, this meant that Brime was potentially a collab between several of the industry’s leading names who were working on launching a new competing platform to Twitch.

On June 28th, Facebook[4] user ‎Ryan Hilbert‎ posted an image under the caption “Brime is following 11 people. Look who. I’m telling you, this will be the outcome of everything,” alleging that it was possibly proof of a collaboration.

On June 28th, KEEMSTAR tweeted a 4chan conspiracy theory post referencing Brime on his Twitter,[5] further sparking rumors. The tweet (shown below) received over 11,700 likes, 882 retweets and 378 replies.

Forbes[7] journalist Paul Tassi published an article, titled “What Is Brime, The Latest Streaming Conspiracy Involving Ninja, Shroud And Doc?,” on June 28th that addressed several of these conspiracy theories and claims. In the article, Tassi pointed out that the 4chan theory is likely false due to the fact that Google doesn’t own Spotify, no one has come out and said that Doc was attempting to poach streamers for a new service, major industry players would likely not jump over to a new, unknown platform and that Brime was only launched in late June and doesn’t own any associated domain names for the service.

The Instagram[8] account esport.91 posted an image of Shroud, Ninja and Dr Disrespect on June 28th with the caption “Some reports speculate that Ninja, Shroud, and now-banned Dr. Disrespect might join hands to launch brand new streaming service backed by Spotify,” and received nearly 1,900 likes.

On June 29th during a Q&A session on Brime’s Twitter,[9] the account addressed some of these rumors in a series of tweets (seen below), including one that stated “We can not confirm nor deny the status of Dr. Disrespect at this time. He’s more than welcome to be part of the Brime service, but we are not in any negotiations at this time.”
