About
#DearMeTenYearsAgo refers to a hashtag on Twitter which people give advice to their past selves. Shortly after it was started, it became the number one trend on Twitter in May of 2019.
Origin
Early in the morning of May 10th, 2019, Twitter user @candidqueso, who regularly runs hashtag games on Twitter under the account @brieslisttags, started the hashtag #DearMeTenYearsAgo[1][2] (shown below).
Spread
Over the following day, the hashtag began to pick up steam as several notable people participated. Some popular tweets from verified accounts include a post by @NBCSBulls reminiscing about when the team was successful, gaining over 120 retweets and 700 likes (shown below, left). Ellen producer Andy Lassner tweeted "She’s never going to stop sending you thorough haunted houses. Ever," referring to a recurring segment where Ellen Degeneres sends Lassner to haunted houses, which he notoriously hates, gaining over 330 retweets and 7,600 likes (shown below, right).
Others took a more humorous approach towards the hashtag. User @pattymo tweeted winning lotto numbers for a lottery nobody won, gaining over 260 likes (shown below, left). The person running the Pornhub Twitter account joked "Hey you're the face of pornhub now lol," gaining over 70 retweets and 890 likes (shown below, right).
