About

Oatly is a milk substitute in the form of a mix between oats, water, canola oil and some synthetic vitamins. Due to its controversial claims of being able to replace milk, Oatly has been intensely discussed online by its advocates and opponents, especially after the Superbowl ad they ran in 2021.

Origin

In a broader sense, the memes is an off-shoot of the Soylent meme. On January 29th 2021, Twitter user @milkonaut posted a long thread in the comments of an Oatly ad, which turned viral, gaining over 100'000 impressions, getting 2351% more likes than the Oatly tweet it was commented on. A severe case of "being ratioed". Oatly tried to address this storm of memes by replying, which only served to stir the flames. Countless memes ensued.
