Real Simple A local woman who said a racist hate-group targeted her grandchildren earlier this week claims to have received hundreds of anonymous phone calls since her story hit the airwaves and the Internet The ripple effect of publicity has begun to impact her neighbors, at least one of whom also reported getting harassing phone calls “I'm now on the Internet, with people making fun of me in the thousands," Mary Alice Altorfer said Thursday, “The more you look at it, these geeks online are just a bunch of homophobics, racists and misogynists Altorfer contacted media outlets Monday when she learned of a cartoonish sign posted outside her neighborhood pool. The subject, a black man with a large Afro, stands with crossed arms. In the foreground are the words "POOL'S CLOSED" in block letters A second sign posted Wednesday reads "POOL'S OPEN," and portrays Altorfer herself As to whether the same party may have posted both signs, police aren't sure - but regardless, they say the act alone isn't criminal We're not treating this as a serious incident," said Sgt. Mike Penshorn, spokesman for the New Braunfels Police Department. "It may just be a matter of kids in the neighborhood, and it's really subject to interpretation. Is it a criminal offense? No." Altorfer, who is president of the River Tree Subdivision homeowner's association, said the first sign was aimed at her grandchildren, who are visiting from California and have frequented the pool this week. Altorfer has since filed another report for harassment, and says she receives a phone call-usually racist-“about every minute and a half." All are male callers using blocked numbers or an international operator, she said, and some reference a Web group called Anonymous, whose members' avatar -a symbol specific to the user in online discussions-bears a close resemblance to the man on the sign Anonymous' postings use racial epithets, in some cases, and allude to an online prank wherein a virtual "pool" was “closed due to AIDS." With this in mind, Altorfer said she's now certaineven more so than earlier this week that the sign outside her pool was meant specifically for her biracial grandchildren Nicholas Martinez, 9, and Isabel Martinez, age 6 These (online groups) are the same as the Ku Klux Klan," Altorfer said Thursday. "The Klan went around with cloaks on and hoods on, and these people do it through the Internet, and through phone calls and phony names. Pool's closed' goes back to the era of counters closed, schools closed. That's what it represents." A single news broadcast of Altorfer's story garnered more than 100,000 YouTube hits by Thursday evening. That morning, it was among the top 5 videos viewed on the site nationwide In the meantime, Altorfer said random bank accounts have begun to pop up in her name, as have magazine subscriptions and even food orders It's going to be a full frontal attack," Altorfer said, adding later that "they've messed with the wrong granny."
