Apr 21, 2019 #624 Japan and sexism. Sigh now this is a topic I can speak about. Japan is like well um...I think first you'll need my background for credibility. Out of Uni I was presented with a job that requires a lot of travel. One of the locations was Japan. While in Japan I spoke with a company there who wanted to keep me there full time. It has been 5 years since then and I have lost my English accent when speaking Japanese almost entirely. I've asked multiple fellow natives and they've all confirmed this too. Anyway I didn't want this to sound like a bragging post the point is I've been in Japan for a long long time so I'm not just spouting nonsense. NativeGaijin92 Member Japan is extremely sexist in media. A huge majority of shows especially animated are what you'd expect and I don't think i need to explain how they are. Anime as a whole is too big of a thing to change sadly and as much as I've tried along with my coworkers it just won't happen. It sucks and I'm literally shaking with despair at this at times. You might be wondering why I'm even bringing up Anime when this is a topic on Japanese games. Well you see the two are linked. Games follow popular stereotypes from Anime. Defeat sexism in Anime and you wipe out sexism in Japanese games. What I and many of us in Era do is try to get them to change games in localization which is great because well you know how gross and icky games can be untouched. Rather than pushing the localization to be changed we need to change the source. Sony with their new rules are a huge step but this is limited to only Sony published games. There are many of us in Era who can speak and wrtie Japanese so here's my proposal. We should have a stickied topic in which we members can post a letter to Japan and those of us who can translate it to Japanese will post the translation which you the user can then send to these Japanese companies. We need to push this. Anime though I really don't know what we could do. That's the pure evil source but the market there is so big and isolated due to most anime being adaptations of Manga and Novels that I can't really think of a way to stop it. We can only hope that eventually theyll tire of these sexist types of anime and move on to what Anime used to be. A true form of animated media and not this gross icky sexist garbage we have today. Also I know some websites like to screenshot quotes from Era so I'm making a plea here.
