About
Immortals of Aveum is a single-player action shooter created by Ascendant Studios and released as an EA Originals product. The video game, a magical take on the shooter genre, received a notable amount of anticipation and hype after its teasers and trailers were released in mid-2023, but interest then dwindled following the launch in late 2023. A renewed look at the game took place following reports of it being a flop started to spread in early 2024, with hot takes and discussions about the gaming industry as a whole taking place that referenced it.
History
On April 13th, 2023, the official Immortals of Aveum YouTube channel[1] uploaded the reveal trailer, which explained the lore of the game, a planet in a war that needed to be stopped, and showed gameplay footage including the many different types of magic being used at the same time. This reveal trailer received over 2.2 million views in 10 months, with many comments being excited about the game and its unique take on using magic in an FPS (shown below).
Following the release of the reveal trailer, however, not everyone was pleased with the game idea. On June 9th, 2023, a now-deleted Redditor uploaded a screenshot from the /vg/ part of 4chan in which the game is predicted to flop heavily on arrival because the character reminds them of Forspoken (shown below).
Reception
The game was officially released on August 22nd, 2023, with a lot of streamers and content creators playing the game early on. Initial reviews of the game were mixed, with decent scores and people talking about the gameplay as being fun. On August 22nd, YouTuber and content creator Kinda Funny Games[3] uploaded their review of the game (shown below).
After its release, the game received very little coverage from content creators until six months later when it was officially declared a "flop" and a "dead game" by many online.
In February 2024, it was revealed by a developer that the game cost over $125 million and that the team believes that a single-player focused game is not good for the market. This sent shockwaves throughout the gaming space, which notably had plenty of single-player-focused games selling well during 2023, and caused the game to come back up in conversations and discourse online.
For example, on February 13th, 2024, Twitch streamer Asmongold reacted to the words of the developer and gave his opinion on it in a YouTube[4] video, earning over 300,000 views in one day (shown below).
