Some conservative netizens are implying their war against the "woke agenda" is finally over.

To celebrate the perceived achievement, an AI-generated image of a grave marked with blue hair on top of it and the phrase, "Here lies wokeness 2015-2024," has been widely shared on Twitter / X, Facebook and Instagram in recent months.

The "wokeness tombstone" received mixed reactions online, as some netizens posed a series of valid questions about the meme, such as, "Why does the grave suggest 'wokeness' started in 2015?" and "If 'woke' died in 2024, why are people still talking about it in 2025?"

Let's try to answer a few of these questions and explain the origin of the "Here Lies Wokeness 2015-2024" meme.

Where Did The 'Here Lies Wokeness' Meme Come From?

The wokeness grave meme first popped up in mid-November 2024, when X user @KashleeGarcia posted the original headstone image, complete with a blue wig.

The AI image really took off on Facebook a few days later, after the conservative Facebook page America’s Last Line Of Defense shared it on November 16th, captioning it, "All I can say is, thank god it's finally over."

Why Does The Tombstone Have 2015-2024 Written On It?

The years 2015-2024 on the tombstone mark the timeline for when some netizens believe "wokeness" became a notable part of cultural discourse.

It implies that "woke" has died after President Donald Trump won the 2024 United States Presidential Election.

How Is The 'Here Lies Wokeness' Meme Used Online?

Once the meme started circulating on Facebook, it really took off among Trump supporters, including high-profile figures like the billionaire Elon Musk, who helped the "Here Lies Wokeness" meme have a boost when he retweeted an X user's post, who wrote, "Woke is dead ☠️."

As the meme spread outside Trump supporters' social media bubble, users started to mock the original image, leading to a "recapitiones and other memetic formats.

For instance, in March 2025, X user @NicoExtraPico posted a recaptioned version of the wokeness headstone meme, comparing the blue wig with Pixar's Inside Out animation character Sadness.
