The coat notably inspired numerous memes that month, particularly caption memes on TikTok, some of which ironically portray people who own the Nike trench coat as cool.

History

On September 17th, 2024, X^[1] user @nicekicks posted several images of a model wearing a trench coat, with one photo showing a Nike tag on the inside of the jacket. The post reads, "Nike is releasing a Trench Coat 👀" and garnered over 4,000 likes in two weeks.

The trench coat was added to the Nike^[2] online shop on an unknown date, presumably sometime around the fall of 2024.

Word of the Nike trench coat continued to spread throughout September 2024, and the product was popularized as the subject of memes in October of that year, primarily on TikTok.

On September 21st, 2024, the mulamatters Instagram^[3] page posted about the coat, garnering over 7,000 likes in two weeks. On September 29th, TikToker^[4] @patmorais.ss6 posted a video making fun of the product, garnering over 991,000 views in four days.

On October 1st, TikToker^[5] @wuroy4793 posted a meme about what it might feel like to wear the Nike trench coat, depicting the wearers as the character Sōsuke Aizen from Bleach, garnering over 190,000 views in two days.

Also on October 1st, 2024, TikToker^[6] @nd.mangaka2 posted a video sharing an example of a meme about buying the Nike trench coat when it comes out. In the video, he critiques people who are "waiting" for the coat to come out, calling them "sheep" for only wanting the trench coat because of the Nike branding. The video gained over 990,000 views in two days.
