About
Red Scare is an American podcast hosted by actress Dasha Nekrasova and cultural critic Anna Khachiyan. Most episodes involve the two hosts discussing pop culture and current events in a politically incorrect tone. The podcast has been cited as a flagship project of the "new right" and the "dirtbag left."
History
Red Scare began on March 29th, 2018, with an episode titled "Infowhores." The podcast's Patreon began on the same date and currently has over 13,000 patrons, raking in over $56,000 a month.[1]
The podcast gained notoriety following a 2020 profile in The Cut[2] that described Red Scare as “a critique of feminism, and capitalism, from deep inside the culture they’ve spawned," a line which the podcast itself uses on the homepage of its website.[3]
The show is frequently associated with New York City's reactionary downtown arts scene and grouped together with or compared with other irreverent and controversial leftist podcasts like Cum Town and Chapo Trap House. The show's listeners and overall vibe has a notorious reputation, as depicted in the meme seen below, posted to Reddit on November 1st, 2020, receiving over 120 likes in roughly one and a half years.[7]
Most episodes feature the hosts riffing for about 50 to 90 minutes with little structure. The theme song of the podcast is "All The Things She Said" by Russian artists t. A.T.u.
The podcast explores politics, the arts, feminism, obscure theory, Christianity and the world of entertainment, frequently interviewing other cultural figures. Prominent guests in the past have included Steve Bannon and Alex Jones. A photo of the two podcasters with Alex Jones, posted to Nekrasova's Instagram on November 22nd, 2021, earned over 24,000 likes in seven months.[9]
Online Presence
Red Scare currently releases four episodes a week, two for free and two for paid subscribers. The Red Scare subreddit, /r/redscarepod, has almost 60,000 members and is characterized by a vibrant community posting many memes.[8]
Nekrasova and Khachiyan, the two hosts of the podcast, have individually cultivated a large social media following. Khachiyan has nearly 114,000 followers[4] on Twitter while Nekrasova has over 99,000 on Twitter[5] and over 120,000 on Instagram[6] as of June 2022.
