One of the most eccentric anime-inspired video games of the past decade will soon be coming to the silver screen. Today, game developer Square Enix announced that NieR: Automata is getting an anime adaptation.

The adaptation was announced during Square Enix's livestream celebrating the fifth anniversary of the game's release earlier today. Aniplex, the company behind The Promised Neverland, Fullmetal Alchemist and Demon Slayer is purportedly involved with the project.

No other information about the anime is available at the moment, including the level the game's notoriously eccentric director, Yoko Taro, will be involved with the project. Nevertheless, the idea of a NieR: Automata anime adaptation excited fans. The game's wild, branching narrative starring three androids in the year 11945 AD experiencing the same events from different perspectives has rich potential for science-fiction anime, and knowing the game's penchant for breaking the fourth wall, there's lots of potential for shenanigans inspired by the game and Yoko Taro.

Of course, there's another reason fans of the game are excited about the upcoming anime: There will almost certainly be yet another onslaught of 2B fan art in our future.
