About

Square Enix[1] is a major Japanese video game company merged by Square[2] and Enix.[3] They are highly known for the Final Fantasy series, Dragon Quest series, and Kingdom Hearts series.

History

Square was a Japanese video game company officially founded by Masafumi Miyamoto in September 1986. Originating as a subsidiary of power line company Den-Yu-Sha, which Miyamoto's father owned, they released their first game The Death Trap for the NEC PC-8801. In the following years, they would develop franchises and series such as Final Fantasy, the Chrono and Mana series of games, and Kingdom Hearts.

Enix Corporation was another Japanese video game company founded by Yasuhiro Fukushima on September 22nd, 1975. Rather than developing games, they acted as a publisher for other companies and developers, eventually becoming known for publishing the Dragon Quest series games along with acting as a Japanese distributor some American-developed games.

On April 1st, 2003, Square Enix was formed through the merger of the two companies
