YoRHa No.2 Type B, or simply 2B, is one of the protagonists in the 2017 video game Nier: Automata. A female battle android, 2B and her companions are tasked with fighting alien-created machines as part of "YoRHA" android forces. In the years following the release of the game, 2B achieved significant presence online, becoming a popular choice for fan art and cosplay, as well as a subject of extensive hornyposting online.

Origin

On February 23rd, 2017, the action role-playing game Nier: Automata was released in Japan.^[1] In the game, the android character YoRHa No.2 Type B is introduced, usually referred to by others as simply "2B" (gameplay shown below).^[2] The character is a female, all-purpose android serving in the YoRHa infantry designed like a human female with silver hair, a black dress and thigh-high boots. Similar to other battle androids, 2B wears a visor that obscures her eyes.

The character's design, and specifically 2B's buttocks, have been a major driving point behind 2B's popularity online.^[3] During a 2017 Q&A panel, game designer Taro Yoko revealed that 2B’s design wasn’t meant to be very sexual at first. When Yoko received the original designs, he told the 3D modelers to make the character's butt as perfect as they possibly could, otherwise, they’d be fired.

2B has been a popular choice among cosplayers, with many of them recreating her original outfit, as well as creating custom, often more revealing, costumes.

Butt Controversy

Butt Controversy refers to a December 2017 controversy that followed the spread of a photoshopped upskirt screenshot in which darker skin surrounding the area where 2B's anus would be was edited in.^[4] The edited screenshot, taken in the demo version of the game in late 2016, gained viral spread online, inspiring discussions and NSFW fan art. On January 8th, 2017, Nier: Automata game designer Taro Yoko reacted to the spread of such art,^[5] asking users to collect artworks and send them to him (recap video shown below).
