Controversy Brews As Donald Trump's Meta Accounts Are Reinstated, Allowing Him Back On Facebook And Instagram
Aside from his own Truth Social, former President Donald Trump has gone years without posting to a mainstream social media network after being banned from most platforms following the January 6th Insurrection, but that may be changing soon.
Yesterday, it was announced that Trump's accounts on Meta platforms (Instagram and Facebook) were reinstated after a review following the two-year ban.
As was likely expected by many, this led to a lot of viral debate on social media as users posted their takes, argued, shared memes or expressed renewed fear over what his presence could potentially do to the sites.

trump and facebook are two things that used to be popular but that most people are tired of and whose popularity is kept afloat by internet-addled aging rageposters. they deserve each other but i dunno if any of this matters as much as it did in 2021. https://t.co/b1EWa8o133

Donald Trump has been indicted for no crimes.
Donald Trump has been reinstated to Twitter and Facebook.
Donald Trump is running for president again.
It's almost as if a violent, Trump-incited insurrection never happened.
Or happened, and was then forgotten.— Mehdi Hasan (@mehdirhasan) January 25, 2023
One prominent theme amongst the detractors is a sense of Trump not earning a second chance to be allowed back onto these platforms. This was mainly conveyed by many through calling attention to the January 6th Capitol attacks and how it is believed to have grown so rapidly thanks in part to social media.
Just to be clear: Donald Trump used Facebook to help incite an insurrection and when Facebook banned him, they acknowledged the danger and harm his actions caused.

.@karaswisher on Trump's return to Meta: "Facebook is finally adding new users… Facebook doesn't want to seem like a bygone thing and Trump is pretty bygone from a couple years ago that consumers don't really like." pic.twitter.com/yaskInfF1G

Trump incited an insurrection. And tried to stop the peaceful transfer of power.
He’s shown no remorse. No contrition.
Giving him back access to a social media platform to spread his lies and demagoguery is dangerous.@facebook caved, giving him a platform to do more harm.— Adam Schiff (@RepAdamSchiff) January 25, 2023
Meta spox told @oliverdarcy that Trump will be allowed to spread lies about the 2020 election on Facebook.

Late last year, Trump's Twitter account was also unbanned following a contentious poll from Elon Musk, but he's yet to post anything on the account despite having the ability to do so for over two months now.
