Argylle movie plot spoiled on Twitter.

This article contains massive spoilers for Argylle. Read at your own caution.

The marketing for the upcoming spy action-comedy film Argylle has hinged upon one central question: Who is the real Agent Argylle?

The film focuses on writer Elly Conway, author of the James Bond-esque Argylle series of spy novels, who is tracked down by actual spies because her novels seem to conform a little too closely to what is happening within a real-life spy organization called "The Division."

In the trailers, giant text implores audiences, with a tantalizing tease of a twist: "Once you know the secret, don't let the cat out of the bag."

Unfortunately, it appears that "cat" has been out of the proverbial "bag" for years, all the way back to when the film was first announced.

This is the final spoiler warning for Argylle.

In a July 2021 @DiscussingFilm tweet announcing that the movie was in production, the account summarized the plot, twist and all. Turns out the "real" Agent Argylle (depicted as Henry Cavill in the promos) is Conway herself, a former "world-class spy" suffering from amnesia and writing her repressed memories into her novels.

Basically, this is the equivalent of a tweet reading "Orson Welles is set to direct a film about a media titan with an unusual fascination towards his childhood sled, 'Rosebud.'"

The ridiculously obvious and unfortunate spoiler for Argylle amused the film-lovers sector of social media, who have made Argylle something of an ironic meme after its campy trailer was released months ago.

Judging from the film's full plot summary (which is online, though we won't link it here to avoid further spoilers), Argylle appears to have more wacky twists and turns beyond its central mystery.

Still, considering the film is not faring well with critics ahead of its February 2nd U.S. release date, having its major plot twist spoiled may be the least of its worries.
