Maybe it's because it isn't real and you're commanding magical creatures that can do things you normally can't.

Even a kid would know the difference because the series is about love and friendship with your pokemon. Some won't evolve unless your friendship is good enough (Golbat to Crobat, Eevee to Umbreon, etc.)
