For each Mii that is not wearing a hat, the game loads a Mario hat model and then simply does not put it on the Mii. In StreetPass Mii Plaza, Miis can wear a number of different hats and outfits. However, the hatless state is not simply the state of not wearing a hat. It is actually defined as "having a Mario hat, but not wearing it". Every hatless Mii actually loads the model for Mario's hat, and then simply does not apply it. The hat model is still loaded into memory with the express purpose of not actually being displayed. € (in memory) This is the "Mario's Cap" state. Its internal name is "hat_mario".
