Stuff like this always reminds me of this one episode of South Park. The boys read Catcher in the Rye for class and at first are excited because they heard the book is "controversial" and has been banned from some schools, but once they read it they think it's been overhyped and doesn't really have a deeper meaning to it. They then proceed to write a book that's outrageously vile on purpose just for the sake of making something gross, but once other people read it they keep seeing a meaning in the book that's really not there, much to the annoyance of the boys who keep trying to tell people "it's just a gross story we wrote for the hell of it, there is no deeper meaning at all."
